A project and performance conceived by Petr Bystrov in collaboration with Giovanni De Donà. Idea of performance and Suprematist-like acting: Petr Bystrov Italian Futurism critic ignition; sound architecture and design: Giovanni De Donà Location: Italy - Reggio Emilia Year: February 2009 Project description Historical and intellectual context: Initially associated to the figure of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and his ”Manifesto del Futurismo”, “LEFT-LEFT-RIGHT! ...” is conceived as an alternative scenario for celebrating the latter’s 100 anniversary of the movement in February 2009. We refer our Russian-Italian connection to the visit of Marinetti to Russian Futurists in 1914 and to the consequences of their interpretation. Historically, there is obviously no other literary school but Futurism that would be considered inconsistently in terms of its perception by both left and right winging, progressive and conservative people of XX century would flag its principles for the new concepts of time, creativity and civilization. Futurists would break codes, they could see clearly the signs of the beginning of a new era, due to the developement of technology and its consequences on society. Through their aesthetic they diffused concepts that appear like obvious nowadays, right after a century. For instance, the importance of speed moved from the context of mechanical machines to the one of data on the web; the war still move all the economy, despite the existence of possibilities of alternative energy different from oil. We can say under a certain point of view, maybe not at all, we live in their prophecy. All these intuitions have been differently interpreted in the society. Not alike in Italy, the futuristic project in Soviet Russia has been significantly understood as ideologically hundred percent leftist project and perceived as instrument to create new ways of life and art, highlighted by Majakovski in no other but revolutionary mode of thinking, practicing, inventing, etc. LEFT vs RIGHT. Cultural meanings and cliche. It seems, there are no other terms that would be more massively quoted than those of left and right in the contemporary society and culture, will we talk of cerebral hemispheres, policy orientation or simply our understanding of the world spreading out to our left and right. Left and right are words everybody deals with tens of time while a day. In boxing, left-left-right articulates the basic combination of punches they way one’s being taught attacking: double jab-right hand lead. Whatever you take, in rules of the road, left-hand drive car means different from right-hand one. In boxing, southpaw is often a certain danger for even experienced opponents. L and R mean also the traditional stereo audio channels. Chain of associations would lead directly up to psy?hoanalytical interpretations. Drums and boxing: music meets sport: Snare drum (lead drum) music is used to be signed with ring (o) and cross (+) signs, which consequently mean left and right hands to play with. "Left-right" is, thus, an appropriate formula for playing drum at sight: o+o+oo++, and so on. LEFT-LEFT-RIGHT is a musical composition for... heavy bag. |
