STAMPA: Sabato 11 dicembre alle
ore 18.00, dispari&dispari project inaugura la mostra “Collapse
Version V”, seconda retrospettiva italiana di Cullinan Richards.
Saranno presentate una serie di opere in anteprima che utilizzano e reinventano
forme d'arte tradizionali incluso, pittura, scultura e installazioni.
Questi lavori creano un apparente stato di transizione che interagisce
con strutture di supporto sia reali che concettuali, mettendo in discussione
la posizione stessa delle opere d'arte e le convenzioni di una mostra.
- “Pannelli di legno a tratti colorati intralciano lo sguardo, sono
posizionati nel punto esatto dove è avvenuto o avverrà qualcosa.
Le pitture appese al muro sono ancora quasi tutte impacchettate, ma perfettamente
allineate aspettano solo di essere esibite. Uno specchio con un buco trasparente
riflette e moltiplica lo spazio circostante, o lo assorbe riducendolo?”.
- Prima conosciute come Artlab poi come Cullinan Richards, dal 1998, hanno
esposto in numerosi musei e spazi pubblici tra cui: The Whitechapel Gallery,
Mead Gallery, South London Gallery, Mobile Home Gallery, Museo di Arte
Contemporanea di Siviglia, Fondazione Daniel Spoerri, Whitstable Biennale,
Kunstmuseum di Lucerna e Charles H. Scott Gallery di Vancouver e nel mese
di ottobre 2010 il loro lavoro è stato presentato al British Art
Show 7 a Nottingham. La mostra “Collapse Version V” è
visibile fino al 13 febbraio 2011 .

PRESS RELASE: Saturday, December 11 at 6.00 pm, dispari&dispari
project opens the exhibition "Collapse Version V," the second
Italian retrospective of Cullinan Richards. Will be presented a series
of works in preview, which utilise and reinvent conventional art forms
including painting, performance, and sculpture. These works create an
in-between-state that deals with support structures both real and conceptual,
questioning the position of the art work and the formality of an exhibition.
- "Wood panels painted in some parts slow down the look, are positioned
at the exact point where something has happened or will happen. The paintings
hanging on the wall are still almost all packed, but perfectly aligned
just waiting to be exhibited. A mirror with a transparent hole reflects
and multiplies the surrounding space, or absorb it reducing? ". First
known as Artlab then as Cullinan Richards, since 1998 they have exhibited
in numerous museums and public spaces including: The Whitechapel Gallery,
Mead Gallery, South London Gallery, Mobile Home Gallery, Museum of Contemporary
Art of Seville, Daniel Spoerri Foundation, Whitstable Biennale, Kunstmuseum
Lucerne, Charles H. Scott Gallery in Vancouver and in October 2010 their
work was presented at the British Art Show 7 in Nottingham. The exhibition
"Collapse Version V" is open until February 13, 2011.

Cullinan + Richards è una situazione costruita e non và
intesa come logo-tipo. Questa situazione funziona come una struttura di
sostegno per offrire un'opportunità aperta. Siamo interessate ad
offrire una serie di situazioni nelle quali il nostro ruolo di scrittori
sia messo in discussione. Nel nostro lavoro tentiamo di sostenere e stabilire
collegamenti piuttosto che divisioni tra persone; opere e storia. Utilizziamo
la struttura come una strategica base di appoggio lavorando come artisti
in modo flessibile, non-autonomo. Le Sculture offrono un appoggio fisico
che potrebbe essere utilizzato per mostrare un film o appendere un dipinto.
Sono costruite usando legno, plastica, specchi e tele; offriamo un'arena
per qualche cosa che sta per accadere, o non accadere. C'è una
formalità nella realizzazione di queste strutture che si riferiscono
alla divisione e all’uso di uno spazio su scala umana. Le Sculture
funzionano come avamposti, posizionandosi metaforicamente sull'orlo di
una città, tra una cosa ed un altra. Come un avamposto queste strutture
sono pragmatiche, flessibili e specifiche alle persone che le usano. All'interno
di queste situazioni costruite, le gerarchie normali di oggetto sono appiattite.
Noi vogliamo che nel lavoro tutto sia su un livello uguale, dove la struttura
di sostegno è l'oggetto d’arte stesso. Questo rispecchia
il modo che noi tentiamo di operare come artisti, sostenendo le altre
persone che anche ci sostengono. C'è
una complessità necessaria nel modo in cui noi lavoriamo che è
l'antitesi dell'artista autonomo che produce lavoro in isolamento splendido.
Questo approccio include i ruoli di organizzatore / amministratore / rivenditore
/ artista / direttore / visitatore ed istituzione ugualmente importanti
ed attinenti senza qualche genere di condiscendenza. Non siamo interessate
a considerare artisti gli osservatori e gli antropologici, separati. Quello
nel quale siamo interessate è un modo genuino di lavorare fondato
su preziose relazioni personali. Queste relazioni cominciano con noi per
estendersi fuori fino alle persone e alle situazioni nelle quali siamo
coinvolte. Questo comporta una generosità reciproca che conduce
all'appiattimento per rimanere al di fuori dalle gerarchie. Chiaramente
tutta questa generosità è una cosa dura da realizzare e
qualche volta può condurre a situazioni difficili. Un genere di
modello concettuale al quale siamo interessati è la creazione di
spazi tipo cinema piuttosto che un museo per esempio. In un cinema le
esperienze non sono riferite per esporre (come in un museo) e sono intimamente
aperte ad interpretazione. Il cinema esiste in diverse forme, è
un genere di in mezzo, ed è uno spazio che siamo interessate ad
utilizzare nelle tre dimensioni. Il programma che ART-LAB organizza all'Università
Imperial, grazie ad un appoggio generoso viene da noi gestito come un
avamposto metaforico, nascendo in periferia con le libertà che
ne scaturiscono da questa posizione. L'avamposto all'Università
Imperiale ha perciò il senso ideale sull'utilità dell’artista.
Costruimmo questa situazione per offrire una struttura di appoggio per
noi e per gli altri, come un modo per sopravvivere. Il nome ART-LAB associato
ai nostri nomi vuole essere utilizzato come una via di comunicazione per
connettere tutti gli aspetti del nostro lavoro ed offrire situazioni effettivamente
utilizzabili.

Charlotte Cullinan + Jeanine Richards (ARTLAB) is a constructed situation
and is not intended as a logo. This situation works as a supporting structure
built by us to provide an open opportunity. We are interested in providing
a context where the importance of authorship is questioned. In our work
we try to support and establish connections rather than divisions between
people, artworks and history. Using the support structure as a strategy
enables us to work as artists in a flexible, non-autonomous way. On the
one hand, our sculptures provide a physical support that could be used
to show a film or hang a painting. They are constructed using wood, plastic,
canvas, mirrors, and paintings, to provide an arena for something to happen,
that may or may not occur. There is a formality in the organisation of
these structures that relates to the division and use of space on a human
scale. Our sculptures function as outposts, positioning themselves metaphorically
on the edge of town, between one thing and another. Like an outpost these
structures are pragmatic, flexible and specific to the people that use
them. Within these constructed situations normal hierarchies of object
and display are flattened out. We want everything in the work to be on
an equal level, where the supporting structure is as relevant as the art
object. This mirrors the way we try to operate as artists, supporting
and involving other people, who also support us. There is a necessary
complexity to the way we work that is the antithesis of the autonomous
artist, who produces work in splendid isolation. This inclusive approach
considers the roles of the organiser/curator/dealer/artist/ director/
visitor and institution equally important and relevant without a kind
of condescension setting in. We are not interested in seeing artists as
separate anthropological observers. What we are interested in is a genuine
way of working founded on personal and valuable relationships. These relationships
begin with ourselves and extend out to the people and situations we are
involved with. This invariably involves a reciprocal generosity, which
leads to the flattening out of hierarchies. Of course all this generosity
is sometimes a hard thing to achieve and can lead to difficult situations.
In many ways we consider the sculptures we make in terms of cinemas. The
kind of conceptual model we are interested in exploring and creating is
more a cinema than a museum for example. In a cinema the experiences are
not related to display (as in a museum) and are intimately open to interpretation.
Cinema exists in a kind of in between space that we are interested in
using in a three dimensional way. So the outpost aesthetic in our work
comes from the scenes in films and the novels and writing we like and
also reflects the position we take as artists. The ART LAB programme we
organise at Imperial College, with their generous support, is also run
from the vantage point of a metaphorical outpost, something existing on
the periphery with the freedoms that come from this position. The ART
LAB outpost at Imperial College therefore has certain ideals about the
usefulness of artists. We built this situation to provide a support structure
for both ourselves and others, as a way to survive. The name ART LAB serves
its purpose as a name that is used together with our own names as a way
of connecting all aspects of our work and providing a situation to use.
